Rough & Tumble Engineering, A Book of Instructions for Operators of Farm and Traction Engines
Written by James H. Maggard, in about 1900. This is an excellent down to earth guide for operators a of traction engines.
As the preface explains, "this book is intended for engineers of farm and traction engines who will have everything in the favour today, and tomorrow are in mud holes ...". The author recommends that if "... you read the book carefully, use good judgment and common sense, do as it tells you, and my word for it, in one month, you, for all practical purposes, will be a better engineer than four-fifths of the so-called engineers today, who think what they don't know would not make much of a book."
