The "Countryman's Steam" Manual by John Haining

cover photo

John Haining forsook his father's farm to serve an apprenticeship in steam when it was still the predominant source of power in the countryside. An apprentice's life was a hard one in those days but the work and strict training stood him in good stead and led on to further valuable experience gained in the drawing and design offices of Cammell Laird Ltd, Joseph Adamson the boilermaker of Hyde and SEntinel of Shrewsbury Ltd.

For nearly thirty years, John Haining has contributed a vast range of designs and constructional articles to the pages of Model Engineer. These have covered all types and sizes of engiens and machiens of the road and countryside and, to the delight of many readers, also the implements with which they worked. The latter have ranged from ploughs of all types to cider scratter mills, elevators and thrashing machiens to name but a few, and the monthly "Countryman's Steam" feature has always been a welcome and versatile change of scene from the railway locomotive. As a technical consultant to Model Engineer, the author has built up an enviable reputation for the extent of his knowlege and the immense trouble he takes to reply fully and clearly to readers' queries and problems.

The first "Countryman's Steam" Manual was published in 1982 and was written to expound on some of the problems encountered by engine owners, both in full size and also in smaller scale work. This new and enlarged edition has been extended to cover more fully the design, construction and care of steel boilers in general, with formulae and data used by firms of repute. An extra chapter has been included covering the author's designs of three vertical boilers - the Sentinel, the Caradoc and a 3 inch scale version.
