Here is another excellent large format book from the Classic Construction Series that has already produced 500 Years of Earthmoving and The History of Cranes.

The book briefly covers early road building techniques from Roman times, but really starts off at the development of mechanised road construction with early steam powered machines such as steam rollers, and then the later steam excavators. This then quickly leads to the development of a host of other allied equipment such as graders, loaders, dozers and finally paving and sealing machinery.

The development of all the above machines are then followed through to modern times, showing the changing trends in compaction equipment and other road making machines.
