Puffing Billy in the Modern Era by Nick Anchen

No Longer Available

The Puffing Billy Railway has come a long way from its humble beginnings in the mid 1950s, when preservationists saved the line from oblivion and began running excursion trains out of Upper Ferntree Gully. Half a century later, the face of the railway has changed beyond recognition. Ever increasing patronage and seven day a week running has required more locomotives and rolling stock. The last two decades have witnessed the fulfilment of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society's most ambitious dreams - returning trains to Gembrook, and the much anticipated rebuild of Beyer Garratt locomotive G42.

Puffing Billy in the Modern Era takes us on a photographic journey through this world famous railway in recent times. Photographed and produced by Nick Anchen, author of Puffing Billy - Spirit of the Dandenongs, this 96 page full colour book is delightfully presented on quality matt art paper, and features a variety of images capturing the many different moods and aspects of one of Australia's most fascinating railways. An absolute must for anyone with an interest in railways.

About the Author

Nick Anchen was born with railways in the blood. His father spent twenty years int hte Victorian Railways head office and his great grandfather was a career station master working at locations such as Walhalla and Creswick, resulting in many railway stories being passed down throught the family.

Evetually, Nick joined what was left of the Victorian Railways in 1999, becoming a driver on Melbourne's suburban network, where he heard many stories and yarns, told with great gusto by the drivers who had joined the job when the VR was a united system, with its own unique history and culture.
